Over the weekend there was one match that was a surprise and another that was not so
much. Men’s and Women’s Wimbledon finals were underway as Ons Jabeur, the 3 seed
from Tunisia and Elena Rybakina, the 23 year old from Kazakhstan went head to head
on Saturday, while Novak Djokovic and Nick Krygios occupied fans on Sunday.
On the ladies side, Jabeur and Rybakina played a very exciting match, as it went to
three sets to settle who would be the victor. Rybakina started out slow against Jabeur
who was hot on the racket and took it to Elena in the first set winning 6-3. Things settled
down for Jabeur though, and Rybakina figured everything out, winning the 2nd set 6-2.
Jabeur soon got frustrated which led to a rough 3rd set which ultimately was her
demise, as Elena Rybakina was victorious winning the final 2 sets.
Rybakina now joins star tennis players like Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams to be
one of the youngest players to win a Wimbledon title. Rybakina being a Wimbledon title
winner was very mellow about the win, whereas her opponent Jabeur, showed great
emotion and even saying, “…hopefully it’ll be me next year”.
Both women are set to play in the US Open, where we could see either of these women
win the 4th and final title of the grand slam calendar year.
On the Men’s side, Novak Djokovic remains superior on Centre Court, as he won his 7th
Wimbledon title on Sunday against Australian Nick Kyrgios. Djokovic has not been
beaten on Wimbledon’s Centre Court for close to 9 years now and that is quite
sometime. The 1 seed said that he grew up watching Wimbledon and asked his parents
to buy him a racket when he was 5 years old so he could go and play at Wimbledon
when he got older.
The match started out with Kyrgios taking the first set 6-4. Kyrgios then was heckled by
a fan which he does not handle well and became quite frustrated.
Bickering with Novak and arguing with the chair umpire, Kyrigos dropped the last three sets to Djokovic, 3-6, 4-6, 6-7 and ended up taking the runner-up trophy home.
Although Kyrgios placed 2nd, it was his first Wimbledon final, and being very athletic
and a young smart tennis player, there is no doubt he will be back to more grand slam
finals in his future.
Djokovic and Kyrgios are set to play in the US Open where they could possibly face
each other again. Djokovic being 35 now looks to get in healthy shape for next year as
he will chase another chance at getting the calendar grand slam as he was very close
last year and winning his 7th Wimbledon title, puts a target on his back as he will try for
his 8th next year.
