The Commanders will start a new quarterback in Week 1 for the 6th time in the last 6 years. Will it be veteran Carson Wentz? Journeyman Taylor Heinicke? Or rookie Sam Howell? Lets take a look:
Carson Wentz

Wentz is the heavy favorite (-1100) to start week 1 for the Commanders. If he does it will be the third different team in three years he will have started on. The Commanders traded their 2022 2nd round pick, 2022 third round pick and a conditional 2023 third round pick for Wentz so unless something drastically changes, with the capital they invested they will be eager to have him on the field week 1.
Sam Howell

Howell was once presumed to be a top pick in the 2022 NFL Draft but after a tumultuous season at Chapel Hill he fell all the way to the 5th round. He is a huge underdog (+550) to win the starting job but is an injury away from being in competition with Taylor Heinicke. Wentz has had issues with the injury bug in the past so I would imagine the Commanders will be extra cautious with him but football is contact sport and nothing can ever be ruled out.
Taylor Heinicke

Heinicke seems to be getting consistently disrespected by the organization. After starting 16 games last season and playing respectable football they went and trade for a QB that really isn”t much of an upgrade. Then they decided to draft a developmental QB in the 5th round. If something happened to Wentz it wouldn’t surprise me to see them roll with Howell in the hopes of fully developing him.
