In this past summer(2022 summer) the Pittsburgh Penguins re-signed forward Kasperi Kapanen to a two – year contract, coming in at an AAV of $3.2 Million.

The 2021-2022 NHL season was disappointing for Kapanen, he played in 79 of the 82 games, but he only managed to score 11 goals and pick up 21 assists for a total of 32 points.

Kapanen started this season in the line up, he played 13 games and has scored only 1 goal, picking up 4 assists.

In the Penguins last 10 games, he has only played in 1, and was only give 7 minutes of ice time in the game.

The question is, why did the penguins make this deal happen? $3.2M is a fairly big cap hit, especially for a guy not even on the ice, and he is going to be impossible to move without giving up something like draft picks, which they already have one of the worst prospect pools in the league. He struggled last season as well, if anything they should of signed him for $2M or less, or let him walk in free agency.

The Penguins overall haven’t been impressive either this season, sitting 4th in the metro but currently on a hot streak winning 5 of their last 6, turning around their bad form right around when Kapanen was getting scratched.

The Penguins are currently being led by Sidney Crosby, who has 29 points this season, followed by Malkin at 20 points and Guentzel at 19 points.

Will the Penguins make playoffs or is their reign as a top team in the east over?
