The Marlins truly have a gift for developing elite talent and letting it waste away until they trade them. The latest in that long line of players is Sandy Alcantara. Alcantara is currently the front runner for the NL Cy Young and deservedly so.
Alcantara currently has a 1.88 ERA with 141 strikeouts. He leads the league with a 215 ERA+ and 3 complete games. He is in the 80+ percentile in xERA, Barrel %, xBA, Chase Rate, xwOBA, xSLG and fastball velocity. These are dominant number by one of the most dominant pitchers in the game.
The most impressive skill Alcantara has is his ability to pitch deep in games. He has pitched past the 7th inning in 15 of his 22 starts. Like we mention earlier he also leads the league in complete games. The the age of five and fly pitchers, Alcantara is a horse that you can ride deep into games without worrying about it.
Alcantara has been one of the breakout stars of this MLB season and it has been well deserved. He is having the best season by a Marlins pitcher since the late Jose Fernandez and he can potentially cap it off with his first Cy Young award.
