The New Jersey Devils have been active this summer, and might have just gotten a steal of a deal. Earlier in the summer, the Devils got defenseman John Marino in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins, which was a solid pick up for the Devils, who finished second to last in the Metropolitan Division, winning only 27 of 82 games last season.

The Devils did have one of the best defensive defenseman in the league in their squad, and they just re-signed him on what looks to be a steal of a deal if he can keep performing at the level he is. The Devils extended 25 year old Jonas Siegenthaler with a 5 year deal, having an AAV of $3.4M.

Lets look at his stat card from JFreshHockey:

Siegenthaler is in the 98% percentile for even strength defense, and 80% percentile for penalty kill. One of the top ranking defenseman in the league for even strength defense. His on ice Corsi % was one of the best on the Devils at 52%, and his on-ice expected goal differential was 6.1, the second highest on the team, data via MoneyPuck. Siegenthaler showed strong defensive ability even on a struggling team, and this deal overall is certainly a WIN for the Devils.

He is quiet on the offensive end of the ice, scoring 1 goal and assisting 13 more for a total of 14 points in 70 games last season.

The Devils acquired Siegenthaler back in April of 2021 from the Washington Capitals, who in return got a conditional third round pick in the 2021 Draft. Siegenthaler was drafted in the 2015 NHL draft, 57th overall by the Capitals.
