Matt Murray has had a very up and down career like many goalies do, from winning the Stanley Cup to being traded multiple times, Murray has had far from a smooth sailing ride in the NHL.
He started his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2015 – 2016 season, was then traded to the Ottawa Senators at the start of the 2020-2021 season, then traded to the Maple Leafs this past summer. Matt Murray was traded to the Leafs along with a third round pick and a seventh round pick, and the Senators received nothing in the trade besides legendary prospect “Future Considerations”.
Matt Murray’s time in Toronto has certainly been positive for him, while he has delt with an injury for a big part of this season, he did play in 9 games, winning 6 of them with a SV% of .932.
Well Matt Murray just did something we’ve never seen in modern stat history, he had the highest goals saved above expected that has EVER been recorded in the stats existence.
With 5.979 goals saved above expected, Matt Murray's performance vs. Dallas is the best for a goalie in a shutout since modern stats started. https://t.co/4DXfTKMqxE pic.twitter.com/lBKDveEUkA

A shutout with almost 6 expected goals scored on him, the definition of a brick wall.
Dallas did everything they could, they fired 44 shots on Matt Murray, but still lost 4-0 despite dominating the shot count, all thanks to Murray’s historic performance. The Leafs only had 29 shots, 15 less than the Stars.
Can Matt Murray stay healthy and prove to the Leafs that it was worth it to take the gamble when they traded for him?
