If you somehow missed it, Bo Horvat was recently traded to the New York Islanders for Anthony Beauvillier, prospect Aatu Raty, and a top 12 protected first round pick. If the pick is top 12 this year, it will convert into an unprotected 2024 first round pick. The Canucks are retaining 25% of Horvat’s salary for the rest of this season.
Bo Horvat was in his 9th season with the Canucks, being drafted by them 9th overall in the 2013 NHL draft. Horvat was named Captain of the Canucks in October of 2019. Horvat played over 600 games for the Canucks, putting 420 points.
Bo Horvat recently came out and picked who he thinks should replace him as the Captain of the Canucks. He said “He’d get my vote” When asked if Elias Pettersson should be the next captain of the franchise.
Elias Pettersson was drafted by the Canucks 5th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft. He has played in 292 games with the Canucks, putting up 279 points. Not to mention that this season he has 58 points in 47 games. Certainly a dominant player for the Canucks, and sounds like he is a great locker room guy as well if the now former Captain would give him his vote, of course if he had one. Pettersson is only 24 year old but already putting in dominant performances night after night despite his team struggling overall.
The Canucks currently sit 14 points out of a playoff spot, and are likely better off trying to get a high draft pick as opposed to making a playoff push considering they just traded Horvat who was one of their top scorers, and got younger players in return.
