The Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks have reportedly been in talks regarding a potential trade involving defenseman Erik Karlsson. However, “a major obstacle stands in the way of these discussions becoming serious: the Sharks’ willingness to take on a significant portion of Karlsson’s $11.5 million cap hit.” per NHL Insider Chris Johnston

Karlsson, a two-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s best defenseman, is in the fourth year of his contract with the Sharks. He still has four more seasons after this season on his $11.5M AAV deal that he signed before the start of the 2019-2020 season. Karlsson, who was drafted by Ottawa in the first round in 2008, is currently 32 years old, and won’t be 33 until May of 2023.

Erik Karlsson is having a bounce back year after a disappointing season in 2021-2022 where he put up only 35 points in 50 games. This season he has already passed the 35 point mark, having 37 points in 30 games. He has 12 goals and 25 assists with the struggling Sharks who sit second to last in the Pacific Division, only ahead of the Ducks.

The Oilers, who are in need of help on the blue line, have reportedly been among the teams interested in acquiring Karlsson. The Oilers need to take another forward step if they want to win a cup. His high cap hit presents a significant obstacle for any potential trade, as the Oilers only have $1.5M in cap space. The Sharks may be willing to retain some of that salary in order to facilitate a trade, but it remains to be seen how much they are willing to take on, and the Oilers would still need to clear some space.

In the meantime, both teams will continue to do their diligence on a potential Karlsson trade, but it remains to be seen if they will be able to come to an agreement. For now, the situation remains fluid and it will be interesting to see how things develop in the coming weeks.
