The Calgary Flames just got a huge boost from their newly acquired players. In case you missed it, The Calgary Flames traded Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt and a first round pick.
Newly acquired Flames spoke to the media in their introductory press conference, and gave a huge boost to Flames fans and the organization. Huberdeau said this…
I’m open to staying in Calgary for a long time.calgary flames forward jonathan huberdeau
Huberdeau is a UFA at the end of the 2022-2023 season, but based on that quote it looks like contract extension talks will certainly be happening.
Weegar then also spoke on the topic, saying this…
I’m open to signing a long-term deal… Very open to it.Calgary Flames Defenseman mackenzie weegar
MacKenzie Weegar is also a UFA at the end of the 2022-2023 season.
The Flames took a gamble with this deal, gambling on the fact that these two UFAs and huge pieces from the trade would stay past this season, and based off of these quotes, they certainly want to. Huberdeau and Weegar are both talents players in the primes of their careers, and hope to lead to Flames on cup runs. Huberdeau had 115 points last season, while Weegar had 44 points, and led the Panthers in blocked shots.
Huberdeau went on to say this…
It’s not a rebuild… we are going to help them get to the next level.Calgary Flames forward Jonathan Huverdeau
Sounds like both players are motivated and want to find success in Calgary, a huge boost for Flames fans who have lost both Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk this summer.
